The Velvelettes

The Velvelettes - The Very Best Of

The group was founded in 1961 by sisters Carolyn and Millie Gill with cousins Bertha Barbee-McNeal and Norma Barbee (both from Flint, Michigan) on the Western Michigan University campus, where they were students. Carolyn's friend Betty Kelly was also an original member. The group signed to Motown Records, but were not given top priority, as other female vocal groups were attracting audiences and recording hits. They recorded with Motown during 1963 although none of the material was released by Motown during that year. However, Motown allowed two of the recorded tracks There He Goes and That's The Reason Why produced by William Stevenson to be leased to the IPG label (Independent Producers Group) as as single. The Velvelettes got their break in 1964 thanks to young producer Norman Whitfield, who produced Needle In A Haystack as a single for the group, on Motown's VIP subsidiary. "Needle In A Haystack" peaked at number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 in mid-1964. The group recorded its follow-up, He Was Really Sayin' Somethin, with Whitfield again producing, and spent time on various Motown-sponsored tours as an opening act.
Motown became apprehensive about the group's potential, and wary of the expense of the recordings. Not wanting to let good time and money go to waste, the label released two additional singles, Lonely Lonely Girl Am I and A Bird In The Hand, as the group endured several line-up changes. Both singles flopped, and Motown cancelled the scheduled release of the group's eponymous debut album.
The Velvelettes returned to recording backing vocals, and occasionally were able to record new material for themselves. The last Velvelettes recordings included These Things Will Keep Me Loving You, which became their last American single. It dented the R&B charts, and the group gradually split apart. Betty Kelley, an original Velvelette, and Sandra Tilley, a newer member of the group, transferred to Martha & The Vandellas, replacing older members of that group. Lead singer Carolyn "Cal" Gill married future Temptation Richard Street in November 1969, and The Velvelettes officially broke up in early to mid 1970.

Michael Jackson (1984)

Michael Jackson - Farewell My Summerlove (1984)

Farewell My Summer Love, like One Day in Your Life before it, was a compilation of archived Michael Jackson recordings released by Motown in 1984 as a "lost" Michael Jackson solo album that was meant to be released in 74 but was later held off because of the Jackson's Five reborn success with Dancing Machine.
The nine songs featured on the album were originally recorded in 1973 but had not been previously released. To give the album a more 1980s sound, Motown remixed the songs and added all new musical overdubs. The task of updating the sound was given to musicians Tony Peluso, Michael Lovesmith and Steve Barri. Together with drummer Mike Baird, they recorded new guitar, keyboard, percussion drum parts for the songs. The album reached #46 on Billboard's pop album chart and #9 on the UK albums chart.
The album was released only to be forgotten years later. Like One Day in Your Life, Farewell My Summer Love has never seen a re-release, although the title track is available on several of Jackson's greatest hits collections. In particular, Motown's comprehensive Michael Jackson Anthology features the song "Farewell My Summer Love" in its 1984 remix, as well as "Don't Let it Get You Down", "Call on Me" and "To Make My Father Proud" in their original 1973 versions.

The Temptations (1970)

video
The Temptations - Psychedelic Shack (1970)

Psychedelic Shack, released December 28, 1969, is a 1970 hit single for the Motown label performed by The Temptations and produced by Norman Whitfield.
This single features the Temptations and Whitfield's continuing their submergence into psychedelia, with multilead vocals, hard rock guitars, synthesizer sound effects, multitracked drums, and stereo-shifting vocals giving the record a distinct sound. The song is a dedication of sorts to psychedelic shacks, describing the activities and atmosphere within.

A huge batch of soul classics from Detroit, not tracks from the 60s, as there are on other sets of this nature, but a wealth of 70s gems from labels that include Hot Wax, Invictus, All Platinum, Paramount, and other 70s indie soul powerhouse imprints. The tunes are all pretty darn fresh, and many of them are updates of older tracks from Motown 60s done here in 70s styled takes.

Going Back To Chuck (Motown 1969)

Chuck Jackson - Goin' Back To Chuck Jackson (1969)

Yet another nice Chuck Jackson album that didn't generate anywhere near the reaction it merited. Chuck Jackson was prevented in the '60s from being in the spotlight by a glut of great performers, and also because he landed most of his hits in the early '60s and wasn't really in the mainstream at the peak of soul's commercial onslaught. Chris Clark's Sound (1967)

Chris Clark - Soul Sounds (1967)

The United States' answer to Dusty Springfield, Chris Clark, who also dated Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr.,managed to have only one hit; ironically, it was on the R&B singles chart Love's Gone Bad made #105 pop, and #41 R&B in 1966.
In 1967, Clark released an album called Soul Sounds on the Motown label. The LP's cover art showed the singer wearing a black dress against a black background, in striking contrast to her fair skin, blue eyes and blonde hair. The album featured twelve songs including a rare Motown ballad called If You Should Walk Away (Berry Gordy, Jr.) which was slated for release as a single, but never was.

Higher Than The Truth (1976)

The Undisputed Truth - Higer Than High

Higher Than High expands on the spacy vibes first exhibited on Down to Earth, expanded on via Cosmic Truth, and maximized on this, their exit album from the Gordy/Motown family of labels. Members, Joe Harris, Calvin Stevens, Tyrone Berkeley, Tyrone Douglas, and Virginia McDonald bend your mind on a set that's comparable to critically acclaimed Funkadelic albums of the same period. Life Ain't So Easy, asung by Joe and Virginia, is a haunting ballad about the perils of big city life; Poontang probably shocked Berry Gordy Jr. out of his mansion, the risqué chorus goes "I used to hate it, til I ate it." Help Yourself is the best rocker on the set; this version is different from an earlier version they recorded. And I can't imagine what type of dance you would do to Boogie Bump Boogie a psychedelic groover performed at laser speed. I Saw You When You Met Her is an eerie ballad about a woman who caught her man cheating; nice, but I like David Ruffin's version off the Me & Rock n Roll are Here to Stay album better. 'm In the Red Zone compares sexual frustration to a jonesing junkie. (All Music Guide)

Down to . . . Stevie (1966)

Stevie Wonder - Down To Earth (1966)

Down to Earth is a 1966 album by Stevie Wonder on the Tamla (Motown) label. The album was a departure from Wonder's earlier, teen pop-driven albums. This album and its predecessor, Up-Tight, re-established the sixteen-year-old Wonder, whose voice had recently changed, as a Motown hitmaker. The LP features the hit single A Place in the Sun. Another single, Hey Love, would go on to become a hit for Detroit soul singer Betty Lavette the following year.

This time . . . Jackie (1973)

Jackie Jackson - Jackie Jackson (1973)

Jackie was born Sigmund Esco on May 4, 1951 in Gary, Indiana exactly on Katherine's 21st birthday. Because he is the oldest son, he was most aware of the start and success of the Jackson Five. His childhood was taken away, but Jackie enjoyed this way of life also. Jackie had fun on the contests they joined. Sports was another hobby of Jackie. When he was 19 he gave up a promising American Football carrier for music. Besides, the incredible huge success of the Jackson 5 and The Jacksons. Even though Jackie plays instruments like guitar and piano, he only sings on songs by The Jackson Five and The Jacksons. He is the lead singer on songs like “Wondering Who” and “Wait”. Jackie also made some solo albums. In 1973 Motown released his solo debut called simply Jackie Jackson. This album was a rare piece of recording by Jackie, apart from the Jackson 5. It took Jackie 16 years to make another album, in 1989 Be The One was released. (www.jackson-source.com)

Naturally . . . The Originals (1970)

The Originals - Naturally Together (Soul SS729 1970)

The Originals consisted of bass singer Freddie Gorman, baritones Walter Gaines and C.P. Spencer, and tenors Ty Hunter and Henry Dixon. They were a successful Motown R&B and soul group during the 1960s and 1970s, most notable for the hits Baby I'm For Real, The Bells and the disco classic, Down to Love Town.
The group found modest success in the first half of the decade, often working as backup singers for recordings by artists such as Jimmy Ruffin ("What Becomes of the Brokenhearted", 1966) and David Ruffin ("My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me)", 1969). The Originals found their biggest success under the guidance of Motown legend Marvin Gaye, who co-wrote and produced two of the group's biggest singles, Baby I'm For Real, and The Bells. While the group went on to have more modest success in both the soul and disco fields near the end of the decade, including Down To Love Town, a #1 dance chart hit, the songs they made with Marvin Gaye are their most memorable notable.
After the death of Ty Hunter, on February 24, 1981, the group ceased all recordings and broke up about year later.Originals member Joe Stubbs passed away on February 5, 1998. C.P. Spencer followed on October 20, 2004 and then Freddie Gorman on June 13, 2006.

Miss Dee on Motown

Kiki Dee - Love Makes The World Go Round

This 18-track compilation includes everything from Kiki Dee's early-'70s Motown album Great Expectations, as well as two additional tracks from her time with the label that surfaced on the rare budget Kiki Dee album in the mid-'70s, along with four previously unreleased 1969-1970 outtakes. While it's good to have this fairly rare material thoughtfully combined into one package, it reinforces the sense that neither Motown nor Dee realized the potential from their unusual association. Part of the problem is that there are too many undistinguished cover versions that can't help but suffer in comparison with the classic hit interpretations, not only of songs made famous by fellow Motown artists like Stevie Wonder and The Miracles, but also hits by Dionne Warwick, Jackie DeShannon, Dusty Springfield, and Deon Jackson. Also, however, Dee's voice just isn't as powerful or imbued with character as those of Motown's top talents, and there's sometimes a sense of listening to an understudy for Dusty Springfield, albeit a competent one. So it's more pleasant than it is essential, though it's certainly pleasing enough if you're looking for enjoyable generic examples of the late-'60s Motown sound, albeit with a white British singer rather than a black Detroit one. Marvin's Moods (Tamla 1966)

Marvin Gaye - Moods Of Marvin Gaye (1966)

The album's plan was to establish the singer as a strong albums-oriented artist, as well as a hit maker, although Gaye was still uncomfortable with performing strictly R&B. He began work on a pop standards album, Vulnerable, which was finally released twelve years later. For the time being, Gaye was winning more fans, and had become a crossover teen idol. Six of the Mood of... album's songs were released as singles: impressively all reached the Top 40 on the R&B singles chart and four of them reached the Top 40 on the Pop Singles Chart, a rare feat for a solo R&B artist even at that time. Marvin Gaye also scored his first two #1 R&B singles, I'll Be Doggone and Ain't That Peculiar, both co-written by Marvin Gaye's friend, Berry Gordy's right-hand man Smokey Robinson.

Classic Isley Bros

The Isley Brothers - Classics

Classic Isley Brothers is an 18-track disc released in Europe that looks almost exactly like Early Classics a disc that was released around the same time in 2000. In fact, the two releases contain the same selection of songs, but the sequencing is slightly different between the two. Regardless, this is an adequate compilation of the Isley Brothers' Motown stint, including their hit from it This Old Heart of Mine along with several other Holland-Dozier-Holland songs Stop! In the Name of Love, Leaving Here, Baby Don't You Do It, and a song co-written by a very young Leon Ware Catching Up on Time.

01 This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You)
02 My Love Is Your Love (Forever)
03 Stop! In the Name of Love
04 There's No Love Left
05 Seek and You Shall Find
06 Baby Don't You Do It

The Undisputed Truth (1973)

Undisputed Truth - Law of The Land (1973)

The Undisputed Truth is mostly the brainchild of Motown genius Norman Whitfield. It 's almost as if the band was put up to allow him to record definitive versions of each and every song he likes. Unlike its predecessors, Law Of The Land is exclusively composed of versions of classics (authors include Burt Bacharach, Lennon but also Norman Whitfield himself). One of the greatest thing about this record being that as soon as you have heard it, you will find it's almost impossible to suppress the memory of songs such as Walk on By, Papa Was A Rolling Stone or Love And Happiness and that Whitfield's version almost surpass the original cuts.

01 Law Of The Land
02 Papa Was A Rollin Stone
03 Girl You Are Alright
04 Killing Me Softly With His Song
05 Just My Imagination ( Running Away With Me )
06 This Child Needs Its Father
07 Mama I Gotta Brand New Thing (Don't Say No)
08 Feelin' Alright
09 Love And Happiness
10 With A Little Help From My Friends
11 If I Die
12 Walk On By

The Ruffin Bros (1970)

Jimmy & David Ruffin - I Am My Brother's Keeper (1970)

Motown had a history of recording different artists together, so why not the Ruffin Brothers? Jimmy and David had both enjoyed success; Jimmy charted with "What Becomes of the Brokenhearted," and David had sung with the Temptations and enjoyed a solo hit with "My Whole World Ended." These songs have a harder sound then the brothers usually exhibit as solo artists. Four remakes nest with eight originals. While the former are done well, they won't make you forget the originals. "Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)," the Delfonics hit, is the most interesting of the re-recordings; the Ruffins give the sweet Philly song a rougher edge. Motown released the exciting, uptempo "When My Love Hand Comes Down" as a single, but it failed to establish the brothers as hitmakers. The confessional "Your Love Was Worth Waiting For" and "Got to See If I Can't Get Mommy (To Come Back Home)" are two sweeties; the latter begins with an endearing father to son monologue, and "He Ain't Heavy He's My Brother" is given an epic treatment. David's rough tenor and Jimmy's sweet tenor/baritone mesh well throughout an LP that should have been more successful. (All Music Guide)
